Intersections across the country were causing thousands of accidents every year. Drivers treated them like battlegrounds. Nobody wanted to give way, everyone assumed they had priority, and the result was a constant stream of collisions at ordinary road junctions up and down the country.
So the engineers made a decision. Instead of adding more traffic lights, they started building roundabouts — everywhere.
The idea spread fast. Within a few decades, France had constructed over 65,000 roundabouts, accounting for roughly half of every roundabout on the planet. Today, the country holds the world record for roundabouts per square kilometre, by an enormous margin.
It started as a practical fix for a frustrating problem. It ended up as a record nobody else comes close to touching.
